Isn't Nature Amazing?

We had a bit of a windstorm the other day, and while walking in the park today I gathered pincones. The difference in sizes quite intrigued me, and it made me wonder just how trees "know" how to grow their pinecones. The large ones are from a Bullpine and I don't know what the little ones are from, but other than size, they are identical. I just thought it was pretty neat. Posted by Picasa

Gee, I would have thought the little guys are just "baby" big guys, but what do I know. Maybe they come from a hobbit-sized species of pine tree? See any itsy bitsy, yet "mature" pine trees as you look down while on your walks?

Here in the deserts of Cali pinecones are harder to come by, but luckily there is this great park a 10 minute walk from our house and I have collected fallen pinecones that have dropped from the half dozen or so pine trees to use at the holidays. In fact, I keep a big wooden bowl full of them on my coffee table thru most the winter months. I have always loved the organic, woodsy look of them.
