South Africa #26

Finally we are at our first game drive! We started to drive down the road and within seconds we saw our first elephant. It was as exciting to me this time as it was when I was in Tanzania before. They just sort of materialize like magic. I felt like Laura Dean when she saw the brontosaurs in Jurassic Park. I may have even heard the theme song. It sounds so sappy, but they really are a majestic animal.

This fellow stood right before the road as we snapped our pictures, couldn’t have really cared that we were there. Mind you, the elephant doesn’t have any predators after it either, so it didn't have much to worry about.

Then we saw these ones at the watering hole, note the big bull closest to us. There was another bunch just to the left which were the females and the young. One youngster apparently got in trouble because the big female gave him a huge swat and a few of the other females pushed the youngster as if they were giving him a talking to as well.

The big bull was watching this and he came lumbering over and shoved his was through the group of females and “hugged” what I assume was his little guy. Look at their trunks!

“What’s going on over here?”

“Wipe that sad look off your face, it can’t be that bad.” (All the females quickly turned away.)

“Here you go, give me a big hug...it’s ok”

And then they just all strolled off, a happy little family again.
