South Africa #5

A few things I forgot to mention yesterday.

There are other people on this tour that a lot of you know...some from Cranbrook, and some from other vacations that I’ve been on where we have all stayed in touch. We all have our own story and we all have our own reason for travelling and of course our own likes and dislikes. I’m not mentioning any names here because this is my story, and how I saw South Africa. Their story might be totally different. Plus, we very often did different things, which makes this an awesome group, no one felt obliged to be stuck hip to hip with each other.

I also forgot to mention the egg at dinner last night. One of the women wanted a Caesar salad and a grilled chicken breast. That’s all she wanted. The menu said the Caesar salad had egg in it, so she figured (as one would) that the egg must be in the dressing and they were letting people know that. Or, maybe it was crumbled over the salad, hard boiled, which seems odd, but hey...different country, different stuff.

So her order arrives and the salad is loaded with chunks of chicken, as well as a small, breaded chicken breast on top. She didn’t want all that chicken, so she popped the breaded breast on my plate. I cut a piece off, and it was an odd sort of texture, but tasted ok. I cut a second piece off and all this yellow goo runs out. What the hell? It was a breaded, deep fried egg. The oddest thing ever.

The public bathrooms all have a “mist” of water that comes out of the taps as opposed to an actual stream of water. They prefer you to use hand sanitizer (also in all the bathrooms) instead of water as they are in the midst of an extreme water crisis. This includes restaurant bathrooms as well. They also prefer you to buy plastic water bottles instead of refilling your bottle from the taps, the shortage is that bad and the plastic bottle is the lesser of the two evils. All swimming pools are filled with filtered rainwater, and many are just simply empty.

You have never seen so many KFC restaurants! They loooove their KFC. Interesting fact, almost all of them are owned by Muslims, as they don’t eat pork and they were able to get certified to be halal restaurants. They are extremely popular. Then KFC introduced a Bacon Burger, and they of course, had to follow corporate rules, so they lost their halal certification and now Nando’s chicken is rapidly taking over. There are very few McDonalds, which is a pleasure to see (or not see.)

I’m pretty sure that I mentioned that the square outside where the market is was build in 1696 as a veggie and slave market. Vegetables and slaves were an equal commodity. 😞. The stone pedestal where the slaves were displayed is still there.

Anyhow, I’m going to post this now, with only a picture of my usual breakfast. Yogurt, muesli, some odd raisin/honey mixture, pineapple, mango, passion fruit, toast and a bit of protein. So good!
